We all get scared on hearing the name of snake. Snake is a poisonous wild animal. It cannot be domesticated. There are different beliefs in our culture regarding snakes. In our country, snakes are associated with Lord Shiva and worshipped.
Similarly, in Samastipur district of Bihar, snakes are not only worshipped but a festival is also celebrated in association with them and they are worshipped. People here organize a snake fair on the day of Nag Panchami. People here dance by putting snakes around their neck and organize various types of competitions. People from nearby states also come to see this wonderful fair.
Who is worshipped in the snake fair?
In this wonderful fair, Vishhari Mata and Maa Bhagwati are worshipped. For organizing this fair, the process of catching snakes starts a month in advance. After the fair, these snakes are again released in the forest.
People believe that Mata Vishhari is the daughter of Lord Shiva and after worshipping her, snake bites do not affect anyone. Children, youngsters and elders participate in this fair. In the fair, people take a dip in the old Gandak along with the snakes.
Let us tell you one thing, we respect all beliefs and culture but playing with snakes like this can be harmful for both snakes and humans.
