Exam Structure Of Civil Service Exam
Civil Services Examination is a year-long examination, which is completed in three phases.
1 . Preliminary exam
In Exam Structure Of Civil Service Exam, two examinations based on objective questions are taken which are called General Studies and Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT). The maximum marks of both the exams are 200 and the duration of each exam is 02 hours and both the exams are conducted on the same day. In every examination, negative marks are given for wrong answer to any question (1/3 mark is deducted from the marks prescribed for a particular question).
2.Main Exam
This examination is generally conducted during the month of November/December and lasts for approximately 05 days. There are 09 question papers (essay type) out of which the marks of 02 question papers do not play a role in determining the grade (i.e. the marks of these question papers are not added while determining the final merit list) These 02 question papers are as follows .
2.Examination in any one Indian language chosen by the candidate from among all the languages included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India.
2.English language test
Each exam has a maximum of 300 marks and duration is 03 hours. Matriculation level questions are asked in these examinations.

Question paper I Essay
Question paper II general Studies I Indian heritage and culture, world history and geography and society.
Question paper III general Studies II System of governance, constitution, governance system, social justice and international relations.
Question Paper IV General Studies-III Technology, Economic Development, Biodiversity, Environment, Security and Disaster Management.
Question Paper V – General Studies IV Ethics, Integrity and Aptitude.
Paper VI and VII are based on the optional subject which is selected by the aspiring officer from the list of optional subjects permitted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).
All the above 07 question papers are of maximum 250 marks and 03 hours time is given for it. The marks obtained in these question papers are added to determine the merit list.
3 Personality Test
This exam has a maximum of 275 marks (there is no minimum qualifying marks). The final determination of the category of the candidate is made on the basis of marks obtained in both the main examination and personality test. Almost twice the number of candidates are called for the personality test than the total number of vacancies to be filled.
