Operation Vijay and the Kargil War
In May 1999, the Indian Army discovered the infiltration, following which Operation Vijay was launched. The conflict, known as the Kargil War, lasted from May to July 1999, with fierce battles in the challenging mountainous terrain of the Kargil district and along the Line of Control (LoC). After fierce fighting, the Indian Army successfully captured key positions including Tiger Hill. The war concluded on July 26, 1999, with India emerging victorious but suffering significant casualties, losing around 490 personnel.
