Manu Bhaker
Manu Bhaker is an Indian sport shooter. Manu Bhaker won two bronze medals at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. She won the bronze medal in the women’s 10 m air pistol event, becoming the first Indian female shooter to win a medal at any Olympics. Subsequently, Manu Bhaker won another bronze medal in the mixed 10 m air pistol team event with Sarabjot Singh, making her the first Indian woman to win two medals at the Olympics, and also the first Indian to win two medals at the Olympics since India’s independence.
Manu Bhaker was born on 18 February 2002 in Goriya village in Jhajjar district of Haryana. Manu Bhaker’s father Ram Kishan Bhaker works as a chief engineer in the Merchant Navy. By the age of 14, she had excelled in other sports such as huyen langlan, Manipuri martial arts, as well as boxing, tennis and skating, winning medals at the National Games in these events.
She won the gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games at the age of 16. Earlier, she also became the youngest Indian to win gold at the ISSF World Cup in 2018.
Bhaker won her second gold medal at the World Cup in the 10m air pistol mixed team event. She was paired with fellow countryman Om Prakash Mitharwal. The pair scored 476.1 points, defeating Sandra Reetz and Christian Reetz, who scored 475.2 points.
Bhaker scored 388/400 points in the women’s 10m air pistol qualifying round at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and qualified for the final. In the final round of the women’s 10m air pistol event during the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, she won the gold medal setting a new Commonwealth Games record with 240.9 points
At the 2018 Asian Games, she shot a games record score of 593 in the qualification round of the 25m air pistol event. But Manu Bhaker failed to win a medal there, as she finished 6th in the final. Eventually, her compatriot Rahi Sarnobat won the gold medal in the event.
At the Youth Olympics 2018, Manu Bhaker topped the table in the women’s 10m air pistol event. The Indian flag bearer at the opening ceremony of the Youth Olympics is also a World Cup and Commonwealth Games gold medalist. The 16-year-old Manu became India’s first shooter and the first female athlete from India to win a gold medal at the Youth Olympic Games. In 2019 Manu Bhaker won the gold medal in the 10m air pistol mixed team event at the 2019 ISSF World Cup in Delhi.
In May 2019 she qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in the 10m pistol event by finishing fourth at the Munich ISSF World Cup. This happened a few days after her pistol jammed in the final of the 25m pistol event when she was leading, eventually forcing her to abandon the competition as her gun was unable to fire.
In all four pistol and rifle ISSF World Cups in 2019, she won the gold medal in the 10m air pistol mixed event with Saurabh Chaudhary, making the pair a strong contender for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
She also won the team gold for India at the 2022 Asian Games in the women’s 25m pistol team event along with Esha Singh and Rhythm Sangwan.
Manu Bhaker won the bronze medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris and became the first Indian woman shooter to win a medal at the Olympics.
