Ghori was born in 1149 in Ghor, Afghanistan. He was the son of a Ghurid general named Bahram Shah. Ghori’s father was a devout Muslim, and Ghori himself was raised in a Muslim household. He received a good education, and he was trained in military matters.
In 1173, Ghori succeeded his father as the ruler of the Ghurid Empire. He immediately began to expand his empire. He conquered much of northern India, including the city of Delhi in 1192. Ghori’s conquest of Delhi marked the beginning of Muslim rule in India.
