National Mission of Clean Ganga
In News: The National Mission of Clean Ganga, NMCG has approved seven projects worth around 692 crore rupees.
The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) is a government of India organization that was established in 2014 with the goal of cleaning the River Ganga. The NMCG has a two-tier management structure, with a Governing Council and an Executive Committee. The Governing Council is chaired by the Prime Minister of India and the Executive Committee is chaired by the Minister of Jal Shakti.
The NMCG has a number of objectives
To reduce pollution in the River Ganga: This includes reducing the discharge of untreated sewage, industrial effluents, and agricultural runoff into the river.
To improve the water quality of the River Ganga: This includes increasing the dissolved oxygen levels in the river and reducing the levels of coliform bacteria.
To restore the ecological health of the River Ganga: This includes improving the river’s biodiversity and reducing the impact of human activities on the river ecosystem.
To create awareness about the importance of the River Ganga: This includes educating the public about the river’s history, culture, and ecology.
The NMCG has implemented a number of projects to achieve its objectives. These projects have included:
Construction of sewage treatment plants:The NMCG has constructed over 1,000 sewage treatment plants along the River Ganga. These plants treat sewage from towns and cities, preventing it from being discharged into the river.
Rehabilitation of wetlands: The NMCG has rehabilitated over 100 wetlands along the River Ganga. These wetlands help to filter pollutants from the river and provide habitat for fish and other aquatic life.
Afforestation: The NMCG has planted over 20 million trees along the River Ganga. These trees help to improve the river’s water quality and provide shade for people who live along the river.
The NMCG has made significant progress in cleaning the River Ganga. However, there is still more work to be done. The NMCG is committed to continuing its work until the River Ganga is clean and healthy.
Here are some of the challenges that the NMCG faces in its work:
Lack of funding: The NMCG needs significant funding to implement its projects.
Lack of coordination: There is a need for better coordination between the NMCG and other government agencies, as well as with local communities.
Public apathy: There is a need to raise awareness about the importance of cleaning the River Ganga and to get people involved in the effort.
NMCG is making progress in cleaning the River Ganga. With continued effort, the NMCG can achieve its goal of making the River Ganga clean and healthy again.
