The Voyager mission
The Voyager mission is a pair of space probes launched by NASA in 1977. The twin spacecraft, Voyager 1 and Voyager 2, are still operating today and are the farthest human-made objects from Earth. They have traveled billions of miles and have sent back a wealth of data about the outer planets of our solar system.
The Voyager mission was originally designed to study Jupiter and Saturn. However, after making a series of discoveries at those planets, the mission was extended to include Uranus and Neptune. Voyager 2 is the only spacecraft to have visited Uranus and Neptune.
In 2012, Voyager 1 crossed the heliopause, the boundary between our solar system and interstellar space. Voyager 2 crossed the heliopause in 2018. Both spacecraft are now in interstellar space, and they are expected to continue sending data back to Earth for many years to come.
One of the most notable discoveries made by the Voyager mission was the existence of active volcanoes on Jupiter’s moon Io. Voyager 1 also made the first close-up images of Saturn’s rings, and it discovered that the rings are much more complex than previously thought. Voyager 2 found that Uranus has a very unusual tilt, and it discovered that Neptune has a large dark spot on its surface.
The Voyager mission has also been a cultural phenomenon. The spacecraft carry a golden record, which contains a message from Earth to any extraterrestrial life that might find it. The record includes images of Earth, sounds of nature, and music from different cultures.
The Voyager mission is an incredible feat of engineering and exploration. The spacecraft have traveled billions of miles and have sent back a wealth of data about our solar system. They are truly ambassadors of Earth, and they continue to inspire us to explore the stars.
