BIMSTEC means for the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation. It is a regional organization comprising seven member states from South Asia and Southeast Asia. The member countries of BIMSTEC are India, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Bhutan,  Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. BIMSTEC was established in 1997 with the goal of promoting cooperation and integration among these countries.

The functions of BIMSTEC include:

Enhancing Regional Cooperation: BIMSTEC aims to promote cooperation and collaboration among its member countries in various sectors, including trade, investment, technology, energy, tourism, fisheries, agriculture, transport, and communication. It facilitates dialogue and initiatives to foster regional integration and sustainable development.

Strengthening Economic Ties: BIMSTEC focuses on enhancing economic cooperation and trade facilitation among its member countries. It aims to promote economic growth, reduce trade barriers, and encourage investment flows within the region. Facilitating People-to-People Contacts: BIMSTEC encourages people-to-people contacts and cultural exchanges among member countries. It promotes tourism, cultural cooperation, and academic exchanges to foster mutual understanding and appreciation of the diverse cultures and traditions within the region.

Promoting Regional Connectivity: BIMSTEC emphasizes the development of physical, economic, and digital connectivity among member countries. It seeks to improve transport networks, establish efficient communication systems, and enhance connectivity through the development of infrastructure projects and initiatives.

Addressing Non-Traditional Security Challenges: BIMSTEC recognizes the importance of addressing non-traditional security challenges such as terrorism, transnational crime, drug trafficking, and climate change. It promotes cooperation among member countries in these areas to ensure regional peace, security, and stability.

Sharing Technical Expertise and Capacity Building: BIMSTEC facilitates the sharing of technical expertise, knowledge, and best practices among member countries. It organizes workshops, seminars, and training programs to enhance the capacity of member states in various sectors, including agriculture, healthcare, disaster management, and information technology.

Engaging in Multilateral and International Forums: BIMSTEC aims to strengthen cooperation with other regional and international organizations. It engages in dialogues and partnerships with entities such as ASEAN, SAARC, and the United Nations to promote regional integration, address common challenges, and explore collaborative opportunities.
