Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (31 October 1875 – 15 December 1950), also known as Sardar Patel or Sardar of India, was an Indian barrister and statesman who served as the first Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister of India from 1947 to 1950. He was a senior leader of the Indian National Congress and played a significant role in the country’s struggle for independence and its political integration.

Patel was born in Nadiad, Gujarat, India, and was educated at the Gujarat Vidyapith in Ahmedabad. He became a successful lawyer and was elected to the Gujarat Legislative Assembly in 1917. He was a strong advocate of Indian independence and joined the Indian National Congress in 1918.

Patel played a leading role in the Non-Cooperation Movement of 1920-22 and the Civil Disobedience Movement of 1930-32. He was imprisoned several times for his political activities.

After India’s independence in 1947, Patel was responsible for integrating the 565 princely states into the Indian Union. He was successful in achieving this goal through a combination of persuasion, negotiation, and force.

Patel also played a key role in the drafting of the Constitution of India. He was a strong advocate of a strong central government and helped to ensure that the Constitution provided for a federal system with a strong central government.
